Maybe I'm doing something wrong... [Nov. 12th, 2009|09:17 am]

wolfwings
...but every, single, god-damn time I try to install Ubuntu under VMWare Server... everything from square one of the installer to the final VM, no matter what I do, runs like ass.

I mean it, it feels like I'm trying to play Quake 3 over a satellite link, navigating the menu's on the Ubuntu install CD, Server or Desktop. Text-mode or not.

And even SSHing into the minimal box, typing has random pauses, pressing tab for auto-complete just flat hangs for ten or more seconds... it just makes no sense. Processes just hang and freeze with no warning, just sitting there spinning their wheels, then the VM decides to do more again...

This is regardless of if VMWare tools, Open-VM-Tools, or no VM tools are installed. Regardless of if it's 32-bit or 64-bit, LSILogic, BusLogic, or IDE hard drives, or anything else. What is Ubuntu doing to the kernel and everything else to make it run this poorly?

And CentOS I've just never been patient enough to sit through their freakin' DVD or full set of CD images just to get the VM installed... seriously, their packaging system is borked when it can't even understand the concept of 'just give me a minimal install CD' as a core concept. Hello? This isn't the Slackware days when we need to sneakernet everything to a friend's house... why do we need to download a couple of gigabytes just to install your OS? What is this, MicroSoft?

Then I compare everything to Gentoo's kernels, where things just scream along, my clock doesn't fall out of sync, the installer is under half a gig for the main install, and there's no cruft from the get-go... it just... baffles me. There's basically no chance Gentoo can ever get into Corp datacenter environments, but gah...

And yes, this is a kinda random rant. Still... gah!

Dear Internet,

Are there any sassy web designers out there looking for a contract gig?

Please respond to ravenink(at)gmail(dot)com with your prices, examples of your work, and where you know me from. A coworker wants someone to build his website and I want to give one of you the referral. If it goes well, repeat business is a strong possibility. Must be able to work in Wordpress.

Thanks in advance for contacting me. I hope one of you guys gets it. :)

Truly,
~Kigs

On Veteran's Day [Nov. 11th, 2009|08:31 am]

(Written in 2005. This week, I learned learned that the still-active-duty son will be home for Thanksgiving.)

I'm proud of two young men who served as sergeants in Iraq
We're fortunate; they went in '91, and both came back.
And one yet wears the uniform and serves his country still
The other's done his job, and both have gained in strength and skill.

But larger than my family, I raise a proud salute
To all you vets who trained and served that needful high pursuit
We're here, and we are free, and we're a nation worth applause
And it has been at your expense -- it IS a noble cause

A small percentage of us puts their bodies in harm's way
Some don't survive. You've bought the liberty we have today.
And not alone for us, a hundred million souls and more
Were freed by US troops. You know just what you're fighting for.

And so do we -- and so today I thank you one and all
For answering your country and responding to the call
Our job lies yet before us, to preserve the prize you've won
We proudly undertake the job that you've so well begun.

So yeah, TOTALLY addicted to Dollhouse now. It starts out 'meh', but it sure does pick up!

Does anyone have some tips on what I can make for cheap but tasty dinners? I'm trying to put down a menu for a week or fortnight and running low on ideas. Throw 'em at me!

I'm a waiter on skates [Nov. 10th, 2009|07:01 am]

Yesterday, Lafayette Park, St. Louis, Missouri: shots by my husband Danny. I'm shooting through a TLR via a DIY contraption in that first pic. I've determined that the gay hanky code for photography ("I'll shoot you"/I'm waiting for my close-up") should be a microfiber lens cleaning cloth worn in the appropriate pocket. You heard it here first, folks.

There's no chain on my door,
And I'm available for consultation.
But remember, your way in is also my way out..."

This is an interesting effect.

It is video image of a snow-covered mountain scene. Move your cursor around the image.

Very nicely done, I think. But don't bank too much if you're easily susceptible to motion sickness.

Hasan and the Hijackers connection [Nov. 9th, 2009|10:08 am]

I see now that the Nidal Malik Hasan apparently attended, for a while, the same mosque as a few of the 9/11 hijackers, and in the same timeframe. Their imam who was teaching at that Virginia mosque at the time has now called Hasan a "hero" -- and may actually have taught him.

Ugh.

Two days ago: Leave house, go to mall.
Yesterday: "...bleah, throat feels weird."
Today: *snrrrrf cough ow gaaack blaaalalalalagh...*

You would think I'd REALIZE by now that unless I am fully enclosed in saran wrap or somesuch, I am going to catch the dreaded snirfblaughs when I go out.

SOLUTION: SEAL APARTMENT, NEVER LEAVE.

Alternately, invest in encounter suit.

Side annoyance: No, mister spammer. I have british friends. I watch british TV. I am pretty sure british telecom does not want to give me one million pounds. I am 99% sure they do not give ANYONE ANYTHING, including service. Why would they give a random american moneys? Go away.

Anyone need a video card? [Nov. 9th, 2009|08:48 am]

tyrc
Hey guys!

I've a spare 8800 GS video card! Its the way overclocked model.

http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/5354/1/1/0/

That's it right there, in that review! I've the box and all the bits that came with it. A video card shuffle in this household has freed it up! It was originally supposed to go into another box, but that user decided to pare back to just having her Laptop rather than a desktop, so, I'd hate it to go to waste!

Warning shot over the bow from Mother Nature [Nov. 9th, 2009|10:27 am]

Roughly two days for Switzerland to have been safe from naked singularities (both point and ring), should Einstein be right. (From somewhen Nov. 3 2009 when the avian deployed a baguette to de-energize the cooling for sectors 7-8 and 8-1, to somewhen in the evening Nov. 5 2009.)

At least now we know how long the Large Hadron Collider will take to recover from a blackout.
